AUG 3, 2019 - SEP 15, 2019 Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in collaboration with IDF Singapore, Ode To Art, and the Consulate-General of the Republic of Singapore presents ‘The Spirit of Ink’ by Singapore’s pioneer artist Lim Tze Peng. At 99 years old, Lim Tze Peng is Singapore’s oldest living artist and one of the most respected Chinese calligraphy artists. Despite his age, creating art is ever on Lim’s mind, and he has been passionately producing a series of calligraphy works. ‘The Spirit of Ink’ is the artist Lim Tze Peng’s first ever solo exhibition in India, held at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai. The highlight of the exhibition will be Lim’s 5 new pieces of abstract art calligraphy that he painted over the course of 2018-2019. These large-scale paintings will be displayed in public for the very first time. From an expansive collection of his works, another 20 specially curated pieces have also been selected to depict Lim’s journey from his roots in traditional Chinese calligraphy to his current more abstract and contemporary works.
One of Singapore’s most revered artists, Lim Tze Peng began his prolific career by painting old Singapore, particularly Malay kampongs, early Chinatown and the Singapore River. He spent his days along the alleyways and parts of Singapore capturing the multi-faceted landscape and the effects of rapid modernisation by fusing traditional Chinese ink painting techniques with scenes of contemporary city life. Lim then revolutionised Chinese calligraphy with his invention of "hu tu zi" (art calligraphy). Marked by a confluence of art calligraphy and abstraction, Lim’s calligraphy bursts forth from the two-dimensional plane, carrying its own life force. In 2003, Lim was awarded the Cultural Medallion Award as well as the Meritorious Service Medal in 2016 for his contribution to Singapore’s historical and cultural narrative.

Join us for a performance exploring calligraphy as an art form through the fusion of English and Devanagari script. The session is inspired by the exhibition ‘The Spirit of Ink’ that displays works by Singaporean artist Lim Tze Peng. Lim revolutionised Chinese calligraphy with his invention of "hu tu zi" which is marked by a confluence of art calligraphy and abstraction.
The session will be conducted by Achyut Palav and Akshaya Thombre.

Join us for a workshop on experimental typography and explore vernacular scripts as a powerful tool for expression. The workshop is inspired by exhibition ‘The Spirit of Ink’ that displays works by Singaporean artist Lim Tze Peng. Lim revolutionized Chinese calligraphy with his invention of "hu tu zi" which is marked by a confluence of art calligraphy and abstraction. Kruti Saraiya is a graphic designer/ typographer based in Mumbai. As a typographer, she sees her role in infusing context into letters and bringing the written word alive. Her strengths lie in working with scripts of Indian languages to create an equal space for them alongside English in urban India.

Join us for a walkthrough of our ongoing exhibition 'The Spirit of Ink' showcasing the works of Singaporean calligraphy artist, Lim Tze Peng. Through his work, Lim has documented the iconic shophouses, street stalls, outdoor markets, and bumboats which formed the essence of Chinatown and Singapore River before the landscape was overhauled. Chinatown today, is much smaller than what it was, most of it having been replaced and taken over by skyscrapers and high rise buildings.
Understand urban development in Mumbai in contrast to Singapore through the museum's collection of maps and dioramas. The tour will be followed by a workshop where participants can sketch from their own experiences.
