Write with Art: Craft a Story at the Museum

Inspired by the exhibition on the Museum’s Contemporary Art Acquisitions, participants engage with the contemporary art works through crafty word play, twisting plot-lines and creative characterisation.
On display are works by renowned Indian artists: Archana Hande, Atul Dodiya, CAMP, Jitish Kallat, L.N.Tallur, Nalini Malani, Praneet Soi, Ranjani Shettar, Reena Kallat, Rohini Devasher, Sheba Chhachhi and Thukral & Tagra.

A collage activity inspired by the exhibition, 'Crystal Cities' by Jagannath Panda.
Jagannath Panda's paintings, sculptures and installations draw from urban surroundings to explore issues of dislocation and chaos in rapidly changing cities.
Take a tour of the exhibition, reflect on his works and create a collage using found and discarded materials that imagines and maps a future reality for Mumbai.

Festive Fun: Kolam Rangoli Painting Workshop

Celebrate Diwali at the Museum! Kolam, also known as the Rangoli or Muggu, is a traditional Indian folk art practised widely in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu. It uses geometrical patterns and symbols that are believed to be auspicious. Kolam is usually drawn with rice flour outside homes or in prayer rooms as an invitation to Goddess Lakshmi during Diwali.
The workshop will be conducted in collaboration with Iteeha.
Age group: 16+

Materials provided include: square wooden bases, marigold flowers, design patterns and stencils.

An interactive story-writing and imagination building workshop with Vinitha Ramchandani

A story is the most powerful tool of learning for anyone. As someone rightly said, "The world is shaped by two things: stories told and the memories they leave behind." If you are one of those who always wanted to write and did not know where and how to start, this workshop is for you!
What this workshop will do for the participants:
1. The workshop will bring the stories out of each participant and strengthen ways to think creatively and strategically.
2. It will equip the participants with a host of tools and creative methods that can be used very effectively whenever ones chooses to start writing.
3. It will bring you together with people who share the same goal.
4. This course is being conducted by an established writer and editor.
Workshop Structure:
1) What is creative writing and how to tell a story
This session will not only explore each participant’s need from the course, it will also examine what each participant is more aligned towards: short story writing, novel writing or biographies or creative non-fiction. 2) The art and craft of short-story writing
This will cover what is the definition of short story writing, how to structure a short story and tips to make a short story work. At the end of this session participants are given three ingredients that may not necessarily connect with each other and they have to work in groups to create a story with these ingredients. 3) How to bring writing to life
Techniques to make YOUR writing stand out. 4) Giving life to characters
Every story has a protagonist. Some stories have more than one protagonist. This session deals with how to breathe life into characters, to make them real and to make your readers ‘see’ the characters as if they were viewing a film. 5) Writing dialogues
Each of the above sessions will include hands-on exercises and guidance post the exercise.
About Vinitha Ramchandani:
Published author of children’s fiction, with 20 published works of children’s fiction available in leading bookstores across the country, Vinitha's books are part of CBSE English Learning Programme (ELP) and is now included in the ISCE ELP. She writes a column on parenting called Mommy 24x7 for magazine Parent Edge and currently writes a column exploring children’s spaces in Mumbai called ‘Mumbai For Kids With Vinitha Ramchandani’ with well-known tabloid, Mid-Day. Her new book for children on Subhash Chandra Bose, commissioned by Hachette, and released in mid-2015 was listed as the top 20 must-have books for children. Vinitha has been an editor for the last 15 years, working in book publishing for the last five years. Her forte is identifying potential manuscripts and helping bestselling authors transform their work. She does this by steering them through tips and tools of writing and editing.

Share your own stories, images and narratives in this unique workshop that will involve interactive sessions, the use of computers and mobile phones. The Urbz team will work with participants who bring in material from their own lives - photos of their homes and contexts in Mumbai, where they live, as well as of any other place they also belong to.

From Timber to Timbre: A Sarod masterclass by Suresh Vyas

A masterclass tracing the glorious history of the melodious instrument the Sarod, from its humble origins to its present form.Suresh Vyas of the Senia Maihar Gharana will unravel the instrument even as he shares stories of the great maestro Baba Allauddin Khan.The programme will conclude with a short recital of 2 Raags created by Baba Allauddin Khan.

Suresh Vyas has earned his tutelage under the legendary Ma Annapurna Deviji daughter of Baba Alauddin Khan. Suresh has been learning the Sarod for over 35 yrs. He is a teacher, performer and a raconteur and has to his credit several performances and speaking assignments.

An event where members of the public are invited to drum and create music together. It’s a stress buster, a great way to meet like-minded people and an opportunity to reconnect with your inner rhythm.
Taal Inc. brings music to each and every one in the community! These Community Drum Circles are our little step towards bringing drums, rhythm and the sheer joy that they precede, into every single home. They do these drum circles in Pune, Mumbai and Goa.
You need not be a drummer or musician to be a part of our monthly sessions. If you have an instrument, bring it along else you will be provided with a drum / percussion instrument.

Make Your Own Terrarium!
Participate in this workshop to create a terrarium that you can take back home! Terrariums are unique, mini ecosystems in glass bowls.The workshop will be conducted by a professional gardening expert Anusha Babbar.
This workshop is inspired by the work 'Terrasphere' on display at the Museum as part of an ongoing exhibition titled 'Speculations From The Field' by Rohini Devasher.

Film-Making on the Phone
Short-film and brand maker Rahul Datta of the Starving Artists Films guided the participants on different hacks and techniques for creating short films using just a smartphone.

What’s your type?
This workshop was presented as part of the outreach for the temporary exhibition ‘EYE ON POLAND: New Graphic Design from Poland’, which showcases contemporary Polish design through posters, books, vinyl and cd covers.
Inspired by this exhibition, the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum hosted a typography workshop conducted by graphic designer and typographer Kruti Saraiya.

Photomontage Workshop
Drawing on the exhibition ‘Silver Magic Vintage Photographs of the Golden Age of Hindi Cinema’, participants transformed and combined pre-existing, disparate images from Hindi cinema to create a new, imaginary reality. Participants re-created popular scene stills or movie posters from their imagination!

Photo-Walk through Byculla
Travel and adventure photographer Mayank Soni led a photo-walk through the Museum’s immediate neighbourhood of Byculla. Participants explored the heritage precinct’s markets, cafes, bungalows, businesses and religious sites, and, under Mayank’s expert guidance, caught it all on camera!

Artist and crafter Nibha Sikander revealed how she creates delicate 3D sculptures using only coloured paper and a very sharp cutter.
