The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Consulate General of Italy in Mumbai and Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Mumbai are pleased to present L’invenzione della luce (the invention of light), Caravaggio’s ‘Magdalene in Ecstasy’.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) is one of the most influential artists in European art. He rejected the idealised forms of Renaissance painting and depicted his subjects with unflinching realism and heightened emotional intensity. Renowned for his dramatic use of chiaroscuro, he transformed the visual language of Baroque art through his emotive realism. The artwork ‘Magdalene in Ecstasy’, painted around 1606, depicts Mary Magdalene in spiritual transcendence, in a moment of divine rapture.

Caravaggio’s influence on his contemporaries, both in Italy and across Europe, was immediate and transformative. Though often described as a realist, ‘theatrical’ may better capture the essence of his art. His realism lay not in faithful representation, but in the ability to distill a pivotal moment into a single, electrifying image. His scenes possess a vivid immediacy - an anticipation of the cinematic or photographic.

Caravaggio’s painting is presented in conjunction with early twentieth century artworks by renowned Indian artist Rao Bahadur Mahadev Vishwanath Dhurandhar, depicting a story from Hindu mythology. It expresses emotional love as a metaphor for spiritual love, similar to the theme of the Caravaggio painting. Though separated by centuries and geography, both artists explore themes of devotion and transcendence.

Girish Shahane traces Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s rise to becoming the most influential artist of his era, the violent disposition which shadowed his life, the decline in reputation following his death, and the dramatic rebound in popularity in recent decades. The talk is structured around a personal account of the speaker’s discovery of Caravaggio and subsequent encounters with his paintings.

See. Think. Wonder.

with Priya Aga

Sat, 26 Oct 2025, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

This interactive storytelling workshop invites children to step into the world of Caravaggio’s Magdalene in Ecstasy and artist Dhurandhar’s works, 'Usha and Aniruddha' and 'Outraged Banasura'. Through close-looking and imaginative exploration, participants will discover how a single frozen moment in a painting can unfold entire narratives. The participants will be encouraged to write or illustrate their own cinematic scenes from the stories they develop inspired by the artworks, exploring the setting, characters, and emotions, and make personal connections with what they see.

Behind the Scenes

with Sphere Arts Education, Gargi Datar

Sat, 1 Nov 2025, 11 am - 1 pm

Join us for a theatre workshop that transforms paintings into stories! We invite children to explore light, gesture, movement, and stillness in artworks, to understand the idea of emotional catharsis - the turning point of change, and the feeling hidden within each artwork. Through scene building, and improvisation, they will then create short performances expressing transformation and joy.
