Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum and Art Deco Alive! presents 'Ocean Drive to Marine Drive: Mapping a Century of Art Deco, Miami-Mumbai (1925-2025)'. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Art Deco Mumbai Trust and the Miami Design Preservation League.
Envisioned by Smiti Kanodia and curated by Atul Kumar, this centenary exhibition, held in Mumbai and Miami, places two seemingly distant cities in dialogue. Both are port cities and hubs of migration. Mumbai and Miami share remarkable Art Deco legacies, shaped by coastal geographies, economic transformation, and new building technologies. From the use of reinforced concrete and tropical ornamentation to aspirations for leisure, and glamour, Art Deco in both cities reflected shared material conditions and divergent cultural worlds.
In Mumbai, Art Deco marked a shift from colonial Gothic architecture to a homegrown rendition of Art Deco. Indian architects, such as Master Sathe & Bhuta, Perin J Mistri, NG Pansare, infused the style with local sensibilities, applying it to cinemas, banks, schools, and petrol pumps. By bringing Mumbai and Miami into the same frame, this exhibition offers a transoceanic lens on Art Deco that is as much about shared futures as it is about entwined histories.
