Comedy in Early World Cinema

Conducted by Jethu Mundul | Presented by the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum

This is a unique course on Comedy in Early World Cinema. As a genre, comedy has been able to survive all technological developments as cinema has moved from silent to sound, from black and white to colour, and has been incorporated into ‘trick’ photography and editing concepts.

The course will explore the journey of comedy from the origins of cinema through the understanding of the role of ‘primitive cinema’ and the subsequent separation of ‘slapstick’ from both actuality and narrative.

It will include a study of Early World Cinema from its beginnings prior to 1895 until the start of the World War II.

About the programme:

Jethu Mundul has 40 years experience as film editor in making experimental films on various socio-cultural issues. An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Jethu Mundul has been a faculty at FTII, NID, IIT, Kochi Biennale and film societies in Bangalore and Bangladesh.
